Second race day: Bologna - Roma
Long transfer without special stage from Bologna to the sea, with the usual beautiful Gambettola's landscape, but this year without timed technical check, and to arrive then at the Rocca di S.Martino's top: always touching between people which applause you. Wonderful.
Follow a short transfer and then the first 7 timed technical check of the day, those of Monte Carpegna: a nightmare for everyone. On gradient road where pass just one car, a lot of slopes with a strong inclination where all the antebellum's clutch had suffered a lot and with pine-needle on the asphalt which make lose the adhesion constantly: the all seasoned with narrow time technical check. I confirm: a nightmare for everyone. Indeed these special stage do the selection. We affront it with a great determination and grit, and in every test we gain penalties and points on Scalise, still at the head, untill gain him at the sixth timed test.
When at the end of the 7 special stage we see time and classification's results on internet after this difficult block, and we read our names at the first place we can not stay in silence and we shout from happiness. That's a big emotion. We look and look again unbelieving, but it is real...for the first time in our lives, and just at out third participations, we are at the 1000Miglia's head!!! What a joy and an indescribable feeling.
Another short transfer and immediatly other beautiful 5 special stage, those of Pieve S.Stefano, definitely "more human" than the previous one. We are "over exiting" to have conquisted the first absolute position and we did all well more or less, keeping ourselves at the head in every timed technical check; again we came out from this block still ahead everyone, while behind us it is caused an uproar between Scalise, Ferrari, Cane', Elicable and Sisti, where at every test they alternate their position in the 5 behind us. Wonderful. Unbelievable, we are still ahead all this expert champions.
After the quick lunch in Sansepolcro, we go immediately on road and at first petrol station we stopped to control the car, above all the wings, where I heard "sinister noises". With Moreno, our "trusthworthy mechanic" named by me "the surgeon", we controll carefully our Aston Martin Le Mans, it seems everything fine. We filled the car gasoline and we eat a fresh ice-cream, togheter with Vesco and Andrea Guerrini, who we found occupied controlling the on line classific; they give us their compliments for the race we are doing, and make us glad of their words.
With the car controlled, we go with calm towards the new hard special stage, the 6 of Forca of Cerro and the 5 of Terminillo, everything so selective, which close the second day sporting part. In the Forca of Cerro's test block, we lenghten on everyone, doing everything very well and in the end we have 700 points of advantage on Ferrari, the better between our pursuer and going up well. But in the Terminillo we commit some mistakes, while Ferrari did it perfectly and at the close of this beautiful point technical check, it's closer to us with 230 points, and immediately behind him, he's closer to us Scalise too, who close with 280 points distance, more outdistance the others.
Usual passage in Rieti with a lot of people waiting in the center all the cars, very pleasant: then streight to Roma, for the suggestive crew presentation in S.Angelo Castle, always perfectly adorned for the occasion. Breathtaking. To follow, usual spectacular "seesighting" drive on our vintage car's wheel for the entire Roma center, moment in where a lot of driver, in particular foreigners say me "even just for both the 1000Miglia's subscribtion and the fatigue to arrive here it's worth to be did, wonderful". We must confirm it. Then everyone towards the reserved night car park.
In Roma, at the end of the hard friday's stage of almost 600 Km, and with 23 timed technical check, we found at the 1000Miglia's head. The thing has a good taste, never tried; and it is not important if everyone are closer in the classification; we will think it tommorrow: now we appreciate the dinner and the Roma's night...in front of everyone!! Great.
After we controlled for the ninth time the car with Moreno and after give it the goodnight, it deserves it, we go towards the hotel walking togheter with two wonderful persons; our friends Michele Cibaldi and Andrea Costa, with who we joke about the role of driver and navigator... where "the fault is always of the other". The stroll towards the hotel is decided by Michele and I, for one time are the driver to chose... it's our revenge. After this small curtain we arrive at the hotel where they wait us an unexpected and pleasant dinner with the friends Sandra and Corrado, who is the Classicteam Eberhard's president, in where Stefania and I are members too. A energies' regenerative dinner under every aspect, thanks to the perfect feeling between the group, and so proper for the moment, above all to the perspective to what is waiting us tomorrow...the longest and harder stage, the Roma - Brescia. After had a good and abundance dinner, we go to bed for our 4 hours sleep. We are tired but happy, rather, very happy.
